Stanford Finally Does Away With Legacy Student Entrances

I can remember the legacy preppie Freshmen…one of both of their parents, or grandparents had attended Stanford. And they knew it. They used to ask me my SAT score as a beginning in a discussion…almost until Christmas they did this.

I was an above average SAT, but when I told him my score, they laughed. One even called me a stupid football player.

I was from Redding, neither of my parents attended Stanford…my cousin did, was one of the greatest baseball player in the history of Redding, Ray Swarts….

Anyway, I almost left Stanford with all the legacy snobs around.

Finally I just said the hell with it….and attended, with a final 3.8 GPA and of course I did it with no cost to my parents…I was on scholarship.

This was in the 60s and the nation was just fighting over desegregating education. Stanford led the charge.

However our Senior Year on Varsity Football had less than a dozen players of color. Today the team is about 1/2!

What is wrong with equal treatment under the law.

Today, just today, Trump is running on a platform that is trying to reinstate segregation. Southern states are passing laws to discriminate against “minorities” again…Florida is the worst.

What is wrong with equal opportunity? Why should children be judged positively or negatively based on their children!

I was and am probably too proud about my graduating from Stanford and playing football there.

But very few people have done that.

However, I am very aware that my success is NOT to be handed down to my kids or grandkids…

What is wrong with that….
